Pte Joseph Rackman Panel 27 Column 1

Joseph was born on August 27 1909 in Sheffield England as the son of George Arthur and Fanny Rackham. He was married with Margaret Rackham and they had three daughters: Marguerite Joan, Elizabeth Jean and Ruth Diane Rackman.
And his sisters were: Mrs. Ida Forbes and Mrs. Norma Schneidmiller and he had one brother: Harry Rackman who was in the army too in Canada.

He was a hotel clerk and member of the Church of England.

He enlisted on June 22 1942 in Calgary and he went overseas to the UK on September 14 1943 and he was taken on strength to the Canadian Scottish Regiment on May 29 1944. He went thereafter on June 6 1944 to France for the D-Day landing.

Joseph was seriously wounded in action on the same day in the B Coy and he died the next day on Wednesday June 7 age 34 and he was buried at sea at the HM LST 239 on the way to England.

His medals were: 39-45 Medal; France Germany Medal; CVSM & Clasp; War Medal.
